ABOUT

ABOUT

Children of the Canyon - a photograph made in the Grand Canyon, in a place displaying souvenirs and local crafts. Behind a large window I noticed the pottery arranged on display. I was told that it had been made from clay or sand originating in the Grand Canyon area. Immediately I saw more than just an arrangement of vessels. I placed the jars in the foreground to tell a simple story about their origin - the “children” of the Grand Canyon, born from its own earth. Behind them, the monumental landscape of the canyon appears almost like the mother from which the pottery was born. The combination of handmade objects and the immense space of nature creates a dialogue between people and the place from which they draw material and inspiration.
